Audience Analysis Exercise

Components:

  • Page of audience types. Cut these out and put them all into a bag or box for students to draw one.
  • List of speech topics. Also cut these out and put them all into a bag or box for students to draw one.

Step 1: Have students each draw an audience type and instruct them to think about that group, imagining their perspective and considering what special needs that audience has.

Step 2: Have each student draw a speech topic.

Step 3: Each student must deliver an impromptu speech on their topic addressed to their audience. Urge them to consider their audience’s probable needs and interests as they speak. For example, why should members of the rugby team learn to appreciate ballet?
